In the final installment of the Family Values Series, we’ll study 1 Peter 2:1-10 to learn how the Priesthood of God’s People is the economy of all things in the church. A result of the Holy Spirit’s presence in those who believe, the church does not grow and glorify God through a select group of professionals. Instead, every Christian has access to God because of Christ’s finished work and every Christian is a minister because of the Spirit’s spiritual gifts He gives to them. Therefore, for the church to work and grow and glorify God, its economy must be the priesthood of all believers.
In part three of the Family Values series, we study 1 Corinthians 3 to understand how the power of God’s Spirit is the success of all things in the church. As God’s holy temple, the church finds its success not in leaders or worldly wisdom but in God’s Spirit who dwells in it. God alone gives the growth; therefore, His Spirit is the success in our salvation, our sanctification, and our service.
In the second part of the Family Values series, we read together 2 Timothy 3:10-4:5 to understand how the Proclamation of God's Word should be the center of all things in every church. However, 1 John 2:15-16 reminds us of our own fleshly desires, which motivate us to remove Scripture from the center of all things and replace it with something or someone else. Despite our sin in the Garden and today, Jesus overcame sin in the wilderness, submitting to the Father's will and using His Word to overcome Satan. For that reason, we have a Savior who stands in our place, providing us with victory over sin and temptation, which frees us to center all things on God's inspired, inerrant, and sufficient Word.
The Family Values series is a four-part series that addresses four biblical values that should mark every church. In this message, we examine Colossians 1:15-20 to learn that when the church gathers and scatters, the preeminent Christ should be the purpose of all things. We then consider how our own desires prevent us from putting Jesus in His proper place in our lives and in His church. It's only through the finished work of the risen Christ that we can have hearts in which Jesus is preeminent.
